The Scotsman 'critique'
Saturday 15th May 2004
MICHAEL VISOCCHI’S A Song for You (pictured) is made up of 25 plinths carved up like a topographical map. The Angus-born artist has based his sculpture around thoughts and fleeting shapes you might see as you travel through the landscape. From archways to perpendicular spires, each part is made from wood, rendered in a battleship grey/ green.
After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 2001, Visocchi has been awarded the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) Kinross Scholarship and last year received the RSA’s Guthrie Award for the most outstanding work by a young Scottish artist. He has also gained a bursary from the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Working from Glasgow Sculpture Studios, he has been designing props for Scottish Ballet, making furniture, and has recently assisted fellow sculptor Douglas Cocker, who has just won a Creative Scotland Award, with a sculpture commission for the Black Isle.
Michael Visocchi’s work is on show in the 178th RSA Annual Exhibition at the RSA, Edinburgh, unti120 May.
